Economic outlook of “VARANGA”

Population and Economy

Varanga is a vibrant village with a population of approximately 5,000 people. The local economy is predominantly driven by agriculture, with the majority of the residents engaged in farming activities. The primary crops grown in Varanga include arecanut, pineapple, and black pepper. These agricultural practices form the backbone of the village’s economy, providing employment and sustenance to a large portion of the population.

Craftsmanship and Construction

In addition to agriculture, a significant number of villagers are skilled craftsmen involved in various construction-related activities. These individuals work closely with contractors and engineers, contributing to the building of houses and other structures within the village. The demand for construction work has been on the rise, particularly due to a recent housing boom that has seen thousands of new homes built over the past five years. This surge in construction has provided increased employment opportunities for builders, construction workers, and suppliers of building materials such as sand, hollow blocks, and rocks.

Local Industries

Varanga is also home to a few small-scale industries that contribute to the local economy. Notably, the village has a cashew processing unit and a soft drink manufacturing facility. The cashew processing industry is a major employer, particularly for women, with an estimated 250 workers employed. The soft drink factory also provides jobs, mainly for men, and employs around 25 workers.

Income and Financial Services

The median daily income for male workers in Varanga is approximately ₹700, while female workers earn around ₹500. Most residents receive their wages on a weekly basis. The financial needs of the community are primarily met by microfinance organizations like SKDRDP and Navodaya. These organizations play a crucial role in supporting the village’s economy by providing loans and other financial services. Due to the availability of microfinance, many villagers have been able to improve their standard of living by purchasing essential household items such as refrigerators, grinders, and mixers.

However, a concern in the village is the high level of debt among residents. Many loans are used to purchase liabilities rather than assets, leading to increased financial strain. Despite this, the village has seen significant improvements in infrastructure, with most households having access to electricity, water, and internet connections.

Mobility and Lifestyle

The majority of families in Varanga own two-wheelers, which provide them with greater mobility and convenience compared to relying on public transportation. This has also contributed to an improvement in their lifestyle, as families are now better able to access services and opportunities outside the village.

Local Businesses and Services

Varanga has around 10 shops that sell groceries and other essential items. These shops operate on a credit system, allowing residents to purchase goods and pay for them on a weekly basis. Additionally, the village has a dedicated electrician who serves the entire community, ensuring that all households have access to necessary electrical and plumbing services.

Challenges and Future Outlook

One of the significant challenges facing Varanga is the shortage of available land for building new homes. This has led to some residents moving out of the village in search of land elsewhere. Despite this, the ongoing construction activities continue to generate employment and revenue for the community.

In summary, Varanga is a thriving village with a strong agricultural base, growing industries, and a community that is working hard to improve its standard of living. While there are challenges, particularly in terms of debt and land availability, the future looks promising as the village continues to develop and grow.
